MIDNIGHT COWBOY (18)

John Schlesinger’s 1969 queer milestone arrives on Blu-Ray this week, and it’s worth revisiting the story of Texas boy Buck (a seriously beautiful Jon Voight), who comes to New York with dreams of being a high-class hustler.

But his new mentor Rizzo (a brilliantly wheezy Dustin Hoffman) knows a rent-boy when he sees one, and indeed Buck’s corn-fed good looks are a hit with gay clients. But it’s the tender, funny relationship between these two men that makes this film so important. Forget Brokeback Mountain, this is Hollywood’s best gay bromance. And Oscar’s only X-rated Best Picture. (Fox/MGM). 10/10
