The Roebuck

Want an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, right on your doorstep in South London? Well, we may be able to help you out on that one – especially if you haven’t heard of the Roebuck before.

A secret gem in the heart of Oval (just a couple hundred feet from the grounds), you’ll find a recently refurbished sanctuary to leave behind your troubles.

Forget about work and enjoy a chilled afternoon or evening in their secret garden. (Oops, did we just let the cat out of the bag?) The intimate lighting creates a beautiful atmosphere where you’re free to sip their range of ales, lagers, spirits and fine wine. We could certainly think of worse things to do with our summer evenings!

And while the garden may be lovely to look at, the real flourishing is on the Roebuck’s menu.

Freshly made burgers, ribs, pulled pork and North African stews are all on their frequently changing menu.

Is your mouth watering yet? Yeah, we thought as much. And to celebrate the summer season having started they’ve got Big Food lovingly and freshly ‘barbuckQd’ over whisky oak wood chips, like the Harissa Chicken Burger with the chicken fillet marinated in North African spices, The Infamous Buckburger (topped with oak smoked bacon and cheddar cheese), a half rack of meaty Bourbon Smoked Ribs and the beautiful gourmet Pork and Leek Sausages, or Cornish Sardines marinated in garlic and lemon – all for only £10 each!

And if that hasn’t already got your taste buds doing backflips, then how about booze-infused ice cream that accompanies the home baked deserts? We’ve been off carbs since the early 00s, but even we might have to fall off the wagon for this one. Alcohol and ice cream? And we didn’t even have to go through the pain of break up… Fierce, girl.

Open until 11pm Monday – Saturday, and until 10.30pm on Sundays you’ll still have time to run (or perhaps after that desert – stumble) for your last train!

• The Roebuck is at 84 Ashmole Street, Oval, SW8 1NE.
