07/06/19: The atmosphere was electric with excitement at the RVT on Friday as the queer scene’s glitterati descended for a very special evening – a screening of the Netflix premiere of the new series of Tales of the City, followed by a live Q&A with the author of the original books, Armistead Maupin. Both the books and the original TV series, aired in 1993 on Channel 4, hold legendary status among critics and fans alike. So this series for Netflix had some sparkling shoes to fill. It was a delight being transported back to Barbary Lane and seeing most of the original cast still at their acting prime, with a luminous performance from Laura Linney. The feeling in the RVT was one of nostalgia, and a few years were shed as the wonderful Armistead Maupin took to the stage and recounted some of his experiences writing the books and working with the cast. Well done to the RVT for hosting a truly special event!
