Hello Magazine!

We can never resist the opportunity to shoehorn in an Ab Fab quote. It’s great really, there’s one for every occasion.

In this case, the occasion is a new gay night called MAGAZINE, kicking off on Saturday 3rd December at urban chic den of depravity, The Steel Yard!

It’s gonna feature stellar (not Stella) DJ and hosting turns from The Mac Twins, Charlie Holland, Goldierocks and Joanna Londinium. And it’s all the brainchild of Gok Wan, off of Channel 4! We got him to tell us all about it.

Hey Gok! Tell us about this supercool new night, Magazine!

I wanted to create a new club night which is all about the music, people and dancing. I’m passionate about house music and I love a party – for me, Magazine makes perfect sense. When I think about it, designing a club night is not that different from being a stylist – when styling I use other people’s designs to create an event – with Magazine I’m using other people’s music and desires for fun to create an event.

You’ll be DJing! What’s your fave guilty pleasure to play to a club full of gays?

I have many guilty pleasures! But, I love to take people on a musical journey. I usually start with commercial house, then get a little deeper and then drop some big 90s anthems (you know, the hands in the air kind of tracks) and then hit them hard with some soulful vocals before whisking them away in a deep house bullet train.

Who would be your dream celebrity attendee (apart from yourself obvs)?

Elvis – cos he is FIT!

What will you be wearing?

The beauty of DJing is I don’t have to think about my outfit! As long as I can move in it then it will do (I’m a very physical DJ).

Tell us what you think of the London gay scene

I love the scene. I always have done. The London Gay Scene is particularly important to me because when I moved to London (a long time ago) I truly came out. The scene was a safe place for me. I met many of my friends in the bars and clubs in Soho. But, I do feel as if the scene has lost its identity. It was once a throbbing smorgasbord of fun and joy – we seem to have lost that a little, which is where the incarnation of Magazine came from. I want to help resuscitate the nocturnal heartbeat of this amazing city.

What’s your favourite type of man to have after a big night

If a man were a burger I’d say a double stacked!

Describe the vibe of Magazine in three words!

FUN. UPLIFTING. SPECTACULAR

• Magazine is on Saturday 3rd December at The Steel Yard, EC4R 3UL. 10pm – late.
