We chatted to ACTUAL Michelle Heaton from ACTUAL Liberty X

Wipe down those leather trousers and dust off that red halterneck because Liberty X are BACK!

Well, three of them are anyway. Michelle, Jessica and Kelli are storming into the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, bringing back the band’s sultry sounds to South London.

Liberty X are a bit of an abnomaly – 90s chart pop was all about cheese and being as naff as possible. But Liberty X were COOL. They were SEXY. Their songs were brooding, with urgent beats and lascivious lyrics, dripping with aloof sexuality. Everythin’ about you’s so sexxxyyyyy.

We took actual Michelle Heaton from actual Liberty X to one side, and got her to tell us all about this special one-off show!

So you’re performing at the RVT – are you excited?

Yeah very, I’ve heard lots of good things about it. Can’t wait! And it’s so cool we’re getting to perform in London.

You guys have done lots of gay venues back in the day…what was the atmosphere like?

Amazing! We’ve always had a really loyal following, and it’s just got better throughout the years. The responses we’ve had when we’ve done gay venues like G-A-Y, The Astoria…it’s always been such an electric night. Me and the girls have done a lot of prides over the last couple of years. It’s just always so much fun. And you never know what you’re see!

Pride’s become such a huge thing now hasn’t it.

Oh yeah! And it’s now not really ‘I’m gay so I’m gonna go to pride.’ It’s an experience for everyone, no matter what your sexuality is, what your background is, what you do for a living…it’s become this amazing festival, not just a gig for gay people. Which is great! The whole point is to eradicate segregation. That’s the whole idea. And it’s the same with venues. A lot of my straight friends are coming to the gig at the RVT. 15, maybe even 10 years ago, they’d have though ‘oh no I can’t because I’m not gay.’ But people don’t think like that anymore, which is great.

So from your times with Liberty X, what’s been the craziest or most amazing moment you can think of?

Well, winning the Brit Award was amazing obviously. The Big Reunion was pretty special too. After all those years, getting to perform together again. It was a magical moment. And the other week randomly, I was performing with the girls at a resort, and my daughter and husband came to see the gig. And it was the first time she’d really seen me perform. And that was really special for me because it was like ‘this is what mummy does.’ That was a really proud moment.

What can people expect from the gig at the RVT then?

Well, we’re gonna do all the old hits. And I say ‘old hits’ because they are old. And we’ve got some nice spangly outfits that I hope everyone enjoys.

Liberty X are at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern on Thursday 20th September. Doors 7pm, show from 8pm. Adv tickets £20, £25 OTD.
