RAVERCISE

Do you enjoy raving? Do you like exercise? Then, presumably, you’ll love Ravercise

Here at QX never let it be said that we don’t enjoy trying out new things, which is why we’re pencilling in a night named ‘Fisticuffs’ in our diaries next Friday. So when this week we received an email from the Ravercise team inviting us to our ‘healthy midweek rave: the original underground fitness mashup’ we whipped out our glowsticks, dusted off our lycra and got stuck in…

Ravercise is basically a dance class in the disco basement of a bar next to the Old Bailey (bringing us back fleetingly but thrillingly to the glory days of our criminal past in the days of Al Capone), with a DJ. Don’t go if you actually want to learn any dancing, rhythm or coordination as you can’t hear anything the fearsome instructor barks over the music and have to mirror her movements as best you can, even though a lot of the movements involve spinning where you can’t actually see her.

However, as an alternative exercise routine to a daily gym grind it is fun and as long as you keep bumping and jumping as much as possible you do work up quite a sweat. Also the one where you have to like, bend down, shove out your ass and then whip yourself up again, aka a rave version of the ‘bend and snap’, genuinely works out your abs. Everything aches a bit afterward.

According to our fellow class-goers, you begin to get the hang of things the more classes you attend, though our real reason for going back would be Kimberley, the militaristic, non-smiling and utterly fierce instructor, who was so strict we knew we were witnessing a gay icon in the making. Above, witness a picture of yours truly attempting one of the moves I couldn’t really remember post-class which just doesn’t do justice to the kitsch of the disco room we were ensconced in…

• Ravercise is every Wednesday in the basement of The Firefly (18 Old Bailey, EC4M 0EP) at 6.15pm or 7.30pm. £11.50 for one session, or £60 for six sessions. For more information visit www.ravercise.me
