Dupree-Jokily

Arguably the UK’s top female impersonator, Ceri Dupree continues his 30th anniversary tour ‘Fit For a Queen’ at the Leicester Square Theatre this week. The show boasts sixteen costume changes and characters, ranging from Amy Winehouse to Dame Barbara Cartland via Joan Collins. Sequin specialist Jason Reid spoke to Ceri this week…

Hi Ceri, it’s been a while since we’ve caught up. In fact, not since your last London show, which was in November 2011. We really need to see more of you here…
I know! I really wish I could, but I can’t do what I do on the stages they now have in London. The venues have changed so much since the 80s. It’s a shame, because I miss it. If a Madame Jojos type venue came about, I’d be there in a heartbeat.

Well, it’s good to have you back anyway. So how has the tour been going?
It’s been great! We started on September 1st and will be all over the country. I take a break in November for panto, then continue the tour right up until March 2015.

The show marks your 30th year in show business. What for you is the key to maintaining such a constant and successful career?
Never taking your eye off the ball. Especially now as there seems to be more people looking for work, yet less venues. In a way, it’s survival of the fittest. I look at it as though I’m climbing a staircase, and I always take one step up or down, hanging on in the middle, but it’s staying on that staircase that’s important.

Great advice, and ultimately it’s a job, so complacency is not an option…
Yes, and remembering to never get too cocky either. If I have a great night, fantastic, and if I have a bad one, then so be it. Any performer who says they’ve never died (onstage) is a liar; everyone has, and that’s how you learn.

As well as all the old favourites, there are some new characters this time round. I’m talking Hilary Devey – who I LOVE…
I love her too! She has that striking look and deep voice, with those massive shoulder pads and straight black hair – perfect to imitate.

Any new impersonations on the cards?
Cilla Black will be making an appearance next year. I also love Paloma Faith, so I’m toying with the idea of doing her.

Out of all your ladies, if you had to pick one, who’s your favourite to perform?
Marlene Dietrich. She was so glamorous and cool.

• Fit for a Queen will be at the Leicester Square Theatre (6 Leicester Place, WC2H 7BX) on Sunday 21st September, with shows at 4pm and 8pm.
