WHAT’S WRONG!?

Welcome to Wrong! – the late Friday night/Saturday morning club that’s pulling in the clubbers from across London for a dance session that doesn’t let up. QX chats to promoter and DJ Jamie de Rooy

Tell us the concept behind Wrong!

I started Wrong! in January last year with one DJ – myself – and a percussionist. We’ve moved from that to six residents and a growing list of international guests. The concept’s simple – combine a relaxed, unpretentious, friendly and underground vibe with cutting-edge house music.

What’s the music policy?

Tech house, and the emphasis is on DJs who are really there to perform. I’ve not booked anyone for their name alone, and I’ve always tried to give breaks to new talent who can seriously impress. Alongside me is Steven Sharp, Thomas Wonderland, Joz-f, Xavi Lopez and Eduardo Herrera. Recent guests have included Jason Chance, Smokin Jo, Ariel and this week, Rio Dela Duna.

What’s the crowd like?

Friendly! They’re quite a mix of gay, straight, black, white, Asian, young club kids and more seasoned clubbers. It’s a real melting pot and you’ll meet people you’d never normally expect to. That’s part of what makes it work as a party – and a party is what we are, not a clubbing brand.

Do you feel Vauxhall gets an unfair rap by some other clubs and DJs on the scene?

Vauxhall isn’t one single scene, so it depends where you go. We get clubbers from all over, though, as many come from Aquarium as come from Barcode. We never aimed to be the biggest Saturday morning in Vauxhall – though we now are – just to be the best.

What other gay DJs and clubs do you think are hot right now?

Well, the biggest gay clubbing brand is back soon, isn’t it? You don’t get bigger than Trade – it’s all very exciting. For DJs? People like Tom Stephan and Pagano are doing some great things over East.

How would you say Wrong! differs to other Vauxhall clubs?

It’s more relaxed, the door staff are more friendly, the clubbers are almost like a family – part of it is that the club isn’t too big, so you get to mix more. For us as DJs, there’s a real focus on the performance, keeping it underground, keeping our clubbers’ pulses racing. We say there’s no pop, no commercial dance, no gimmicks. Just cutting-edge house music.
